When you learn your first language as a child you don’t learn it by focusing on grammar and verbs and nouns. You learn the words that you need for what you want. So your first word might be mummy, or daddy, or grandma, or milk, or banana…  you get the idea. Sometimes you might get it wrong…  heard about the two year old saying “excuse me Mother, could you please peel a banana for me for a snack?” – it’s likely to sound like “Mama, nana ta” – and the “ta” only if said Mum has worked on manners!

Why then when we try to learn a second language do we focus on the technical structure of that language first and not the useful parts of that language?

Why do you expect your pronunciation to be perfect first time? (hint: it probably won’t be, and that’s ok!)
